To get to the base of the climb, you’ll ride along the Urft River through a narrow gorge. The road is gravel, but it’s smooth enough for a road bike and the views are absolutely worth it. You can also descend down to the foot of the climb, hough starting from Gemünd and taking the scenic gravel route in is the better call.

The climb begins just after you cross the suspension bridge over the Urft. It kicks up right away till you reach the main buildings of the complex. Vogelsang itself is a massive former Nazi complex tucked deep in the Eifel. Once you pass the buildings, the road opens up and levels out.
