What is Photo GPS Data?

Photo GPS data is location information stored in a photo's EXIF (Exchangeable Image File Format) metadata. When location services are enabled, your camera or smartphone records the exact GPS coordinates where each photo was taken and embeds them in the image file.

This photo GPS viewer lets you extract photo GPS locations directly in your browser and plots each photo on a map. It works with photos from iPhones, Android phones, and dedicated cameras with GPS.

 • Contains latitude, longitude, and sometimes altitude and direction
 • Recorded automatically by smartphones and GPS-enabled cameras
 • Preserved in JPEG, HEIC, and other common image formats
 • May be stripped when sharing photos on social media or messaging apps

Frequently Asked Questions

The Photo GPS Viewer supports JPEG, PNG, WebP, HEIC, and HEIF image formats. HEIC and HEIF are the default formats used by iPhones and iPads.

No. Your photos never leave your browser. All EXIF parsing and map display happens locally on your device. Nothing is uploaded or stored.

Photo GPS data is location information (latitude and longitude) embedded in a photo's EXIF metadata by cameras and smartphones. When location services are enabled, your device records the GPS coordinates where each photo was taken and stores them alongside the image.

Photos may lack GPS data if location services were turned off when the photo was taken, if the image was edited or exported by software that strips metadata, if it's a screenshot, or if the camera doesn't have GPS capabilities.

Yes - use our Photo GPS Editor tool to add or edit GPS coordinates and download photos with the location data embedded in the EXIF metadata.

Yes. The tool uses the exifr library which can read EXIF data directly from HEIC and HEIF files, the default photo formats on iPhones and iPads.

Upload your photos to this tool and it will automatically extract the photo GPS location from the EXIF metadata. The coordinates are displayed on each thumbnail and plotted on an interactive map. No software installation needed.
