The Champ du Feu can be reached from eight different sides, but the climb from St Martin is the toughest. It starts gently, then kicks up after Breitenbach, holding a steady 7 to 8% on average. From there, the road takes you past Col de Kreuzweg and Col de la Charbonnière, with most of the ascent in the forest. At the top you’ll find a roundabout and a viewing tower. On a clear day it’s a fine place to pause, but if the weather turns, best to keep rolling as it gets windy up there.
