Ride the Legends: Your Guide to Cycling's Greatest Spring Classics

Every spring, cycling fans around the world tune in to watch the pros battle it out on cobblestones, gravel roads, and punchy climbs. But here's the exciting part: you can ride these same legendary routes yourself.

Whether you join an organized sportive with thousands of fellow cyclists or plan your own adventure on a quiet Tuesday, these races offer something truly special. And if you time it right (a couple days before the race), you might even find yourself sharing the road with WorldTour pros during their final reconnaissance rides.

What Makes the Classics So Special?

The spring classics aren't just races. They're cycling pilgrimages.

These one-day monuments have shaped road cycling for over a century. The routes feature iconic climbs, treacherous cobblestones, and breathtaking landscapes.

The best part? Most classics host amateur sportives around the same weekend as the professional race. You'll ride the same roads, tackle the same climbs, and feel like a pro yourself.

How to Prepare for Your Classic Adventure

Riding a classic requires proper preparation. These aren't your typical Sunday spins.

Build your base fitness early. Start training 12-16 weeks before your target event. Focus on endurance rides and hill repeats if possible.

Practice on similar terrain. If you're tackling cobblestones, find some rough roads to practice on. For gravel events like Strade Bianche, get comfortable on unpaved surfaces.

Sort your equipment:

  • Consider wider tires (28-32mm) for comfort on rough roads
  • Lower your tire pressure slightly for better grip
  • Bring a spare tube and basic tools

Go Ride Your Own Classic

The spring classics offer something no other cycling experience can match. You'll ride roads steeped in history, challenge yourself on legendary terrain, and join a community of cyclists who share your passion.

Pick a classic that excites you, register for the sportive, and start training. Whether you're grinding up the Koppenberg in Flanders or floating through Tuscan gravel, you'll create memories that last a lifetime.

See you on the cobbles.
