Sa Calobra is the crown jewel of Mallorcan cycling and a true masterpiece of engineering. This road drops from the high peaks of the Tramuntana directly to the Mediterranean Sea through a series of dramatic limestone canyons. Since it is a dead end road, you get the to descend the entire 10 kilometer route before turning around to work your way up the climb again.

The ascent features 26 hairpin bends and the legendary Nus de Sa Corbata, a 270 degree bridge that loops back over itself like a tie knot. You will find a remarkably steady 7% gradient that allows you to settle into a rhythm while staring at sheer rock walls and turquoise water.

The descent is highly technical and requires your full concentration on every corner. You should aim to start your ride at sunrise or late in the afternoon to avoid the heavy tourist buses that squeeze through the narrowest sections. These "bus encounters" can be nerve-wracking on the tight bends, but the breathtaking views and the sheer scale of the landscape make this a true icon of Mallorca.
