Road Cycling Routes near Málaga

This loop from Málaga takes you deep into the Montes de Málaga and the Axarquía, linking some of the region’s most rewarding climbs.

This route blends a fast coastal start with a full mountain journey through the heart of Málaga’s inland sierras. It follows the shoreline east then turns inland at Torre del Mar towards Vélez Málaga, climbing gradually through olive groves and open farmland toward Puerto del Sol. After Alfarnate, the road curves southwest beneath the steep flanks of the Sierra del Jobo, rolling through quiet terrain toward Casabermeja. From there, a final effort takes you over Puerto del Jaral, with views of wild hills and thick pine forest. The long descent that follows traces the Guadalmedina valley, skimming the reservoirs before easing back into the city.

When you want to enjoy a longer flat ride then this is the perfect ride. Following the coast to east to La Herradura you'll only have some shorts climbs in the middle of the route. There are plenty of good options to enjoy a good coffee or lunch on this route. Note: the elevation profile is slightly misleading as you'll go through a tunnel on the way to La Herradura

This classic Malaga loop starts in the city center and climbs straight into the Montes of Malaga. The main ascent stretches for almost 20 kilometers and gains close to 900 meters. The road opens up to beautiful panoramas as you rise above the city. Along the way you pass the white village of Olías. From the top it is all downhill back to Malaga, rolling past El Mirador with sweeping views over the city. The road winds through a few tunnels that link together in a full 360 degree turn. This route can be ridden in both directions.

Set out to enjoy the quiet countryside as the route rolls through a string of small Andalusian villages, each with its own feel and character. You pass through Pizarra, Casarabonela, Alozaina, and Guaro, all showing the distinct rhythm of inland Málaga. The opening section follows one side of the Guadalhorce Valley on calm rural roads with steady, gradual climbing. After looping around, the return brings you back along the opposite side of the valley, with a fresh view and a different sense of the landscape. Along the way, Alhaurín el Grande offers a good place for a quick and easy break if you need it.
